Olympian Rick Hawn Shows How Judo Works in MMA

by Michael David Smith

This might have been my favorite mixed martial arts finish of 2010.

Thursday night at Bellator 33, former U.S. Olympic judo team member Rick Hawn used an absolutely brilliant judo throw to put opponent LeVon Maynard on his back and finish him off with punches, in a textbook illustration of how judo techniques can work in MMA.

UFC return comes early for WEC's Garcia, TUF 12 Finale adds the brawler

We won't have to wait very long before the first official sign of the WEC-UFC merger. Jose Aldo was supposed to kick things off for WEC fighters at UFC 125 on Jan. 1. Now MMAWeekly reports that the first look at WEC fighters in the UFC will arrive in less than six weeks.

... Leonard Garcia and Tyler Toner have agreed to meet at the "Ultimate Fighter" season 12 finale show on Dec 4.

There shouldn't be any UFC butterflies for Garcia, who fought three times for the promotion at lightweight before he dropped down to 145 pounds and the WEC in 2008. Garcia (pictured on the left) challenged for the WEC featherweight title at WEC 39, losing to Mike Brown. He's gone 2-2-1 since, so there's some pressure on him to win against Toner. Another loss and Garcia (14-6-1, 3-3-1 WEC, 1-2 UFC) could be sent packing. Toner (10-2) was 1-1 with the WEC.

Here's the rumored card at the TUF 12 Finale:

Stephan Bonnar v. Igor Pokrajac
Finalist No. 1 v. Finalist No. 2
Kendall Grove v. Demian Maia
Rick Story v Johny Hendricks
Rich Attonito v. Dave Branch
Leonard Garcia v. Tyler Toner

Bellator crowns Konrad, Makovsky as latest champs

Kansas City hosted Bellator 32 on Thursday night, where Bellator gave out its first heavyweight and bantamweight championship belts.

Cole Konrad had earned the reputation of being a boring fighter. In his first four Bellator fights, Konrad won decisions by using the elite wrestling skills honed while becoming a two-time national champion at the University of Minnesota. Konrad changed that on Thursday night, winning with a first-round submission over Neil Grove.

Konrad took down Grove, the feared striker, early in the round. He continued to work ground and pound until the end of the round neared. Then, he grabbed Grove's arm for a keylock, forcing Grove to submit at 4:45 of the first round. With that, Konrad became Bellator's first heavyweight champion.

Konrad wasn't the only champion crowned on Thursday, as Zach Makovsky won the bantamweight championship as well.

Makovsky withstood an early Ed West Kimura attempt, and came back to control West with takedowns throughout the fight. In the third, he cut West above the eye, adding to the Makovsky's domination of the fight. With a 50-45, 50-45, 49-46 score, Makovsky became Bellator's first bantamweight champion.

In non-tournament action, "Judo" Jim Wallhead is headed back to England with a win. He beat Ryan Thomas by winning the stand-up war.

Next week, Bellator heads to Philadelphia for a non-title bout between Eddie Alvarez and Roger Huerta as well as Ben Askren trying to take the welterweight belt from Lyman Good.

The promotion also announced two signings: former WEC lightweight champion Rob McCullough and Polish lightweight Marcin Held.

Thanks to MMA Junkie and MMA Fanhouse for help with results after my cable died.

Looking for a promotion, Johnson and Bowling produce mixed results

Strikeforce develops its future stars on its Challengers shows. Three months back, Sarah Kaufman came up big with a win over Roxanne Modafferi to move up Strikeforce's shows on Showtime. Las night, it was time for Roger Bowling and Lavar Johnson to land that signature win that'd get them the call up. Johnson came through with a KO finish of Virgil Zwicker while Roger Bowling showed he needs a little more seasoning during a loss to Bobby Voelker.

Early in the fight, the 6-foot-4, 251-pound Johnson had to deal with the speed of  Zwicker. He took some good licks - leg kicks and some straight rights - before unloading on the smaller heavyweight. Ninety seconds into the first, with little regard for Zwicker's power, the big man began to swing for the fences. After some huge uppercuts, Zwicker crumbled to the mat. Johnson didn't have to throw another shot in getting his third Challenger Series win at 2:17 of the first.

"I hit him hard a few times but he was in it for the fight. He made it a good fight," said Johnson.

Johnson (15-3) said he's ready for the step up to Showtime's main cards.

"I'm ready for the big show. I want to chase down some of those big name guys and see if I have what it takes or not. I'm not afraid of an ass whuppin',"  said Johnson.

Johnson, 33, mentioned names like Andrei Arlovski and Brett Rogers.

Bowling (8-1) looked awesome early in his fight. His speed overwhelmed Voelker but he got a little left hook happy. Voelker lost the first but started to time that Bowling leaping left hook. Voelker had Bowling missing badly in the opening minutes of the second and fired back with some hard shots. That's when Bowling went for a takedown. It got stuffed and instead of scrambling back to his feet, Bowling sat there on all fours allowing Voelker to tee off. He landed six huge shots and it was downhill from there for Bowling.

Bowling got back to his feet but then tried another sloppy takedown that was thwarted. Voelker got top control and never relinquished it. He stayed busy with punches and hammerfists. Bruised and bloodied on his face, Bowling eventually covered up and turned to his side. The referee had to save him giving Voelker (23-8) the win at 3:58 of the second.

Strikeforce Challengers results (Courtesy MMAjunkie):

Bobby Voelker def. Roger Bowling via TKO (punches) - Round 2, 3:58

UFC 120 KO of the Night: Condit's left hook quiets Hardy

Dan Hardy is one of the biggest smack talkers in the game. He flat out challenges his opponents to stand and trade with him. Tonight, it all backfired on him. Carlos Condit wasn't suckered into a reckless slugfest. Instead, he used a well-rounded striking game and exhibited smoother boxing to find an opening that nearly put Hardy to sleep. In the final minute of the opening round, "The Natural Born Killer" landed a huge left hook and dropped Hardy to his back. The stunned Hardy then took a right to the middle of his face and another left across his chin.

Before Condit, did permanent damage, referee Dan Miragliotta tossed him from the helpless Brit. In front of a pro-Hardy crowd at UFC 120 in London, Condit scores a huge TKO win at 4:27 of the first.

"I was worried about his left hand. I know he's got a lot of power," Condit told UFC analyst Joe Rogan.

The normally loquacious Hardy didn't have much to say seconds after being knocked out.

"I got punched in the face," Hardy said succinctly as the crowd at the O2 Arena chuckled. "Sorry guys. That's why it's a sport. You can win or lose at any point. I'll go home and watch it, and see where I went wrong and learn from it. "

Condit (26-5, 3-1 UFC) also hauled in a $60,000 bonus for knockout of the night. Before you go slamming Hardy, keep in mind, the match could've easily gone the other way. That's how narrow your margin of error is when you step in the Octagon.

On the finishing series of punches, both Hardy and Condit threw right hands that missed and followed with left hooks. Condit's left hook landed flush and a split second earlier as Hardy's punch grazed his neck.

Against a guy with a reputation for having a granite chin, this is a huge victory for Condit. Hardy (23-8, 4-2 UFC) also fought for the 170-pound title his last time out, losing a decision at UFC 111 to UFC welterweight champ Georges St. Pierre. Does that mean Condit should be in the running for the winner of GSP and Josh Koscheck? He probably should be.

Were it not for a tight decision loss to Martin Kampmann in his UFC debut, Condit could very easily be unbeaten with Zuffa's bigger promotion. He was 170-pound champ with the WEC, its smaller promotion. Condit was 5-0 there before the WEC eliminated the weight class.

GSP defend his title against Josh Koscheck in December. If Koscheck wins, Jon Fitch has been consistent in saying that even for the title, he won't fight his American Kickboxing Academy teammate. Condit has no such issue with St. Pierre. They both work with trainer Greg Jackson and his camp based in Albuquerque, but Condit stated during the UFC 124 postfight press conference that if he was offered the fight, he'd take it GSP. That's the kind of thing the UFC likes to hear.

Another feather in Condit's cap is the consistency of his performances since his move over to the UFC. He's an action fighter who's now nabbed three postfight awards. The 26-year-old also has 25 finishes in his 26 wins.

Napao! The ups and downs of Gabriel Gonzaga

Gabriel Gonzaga has been near the top of the UFC heavyweight division for years, but he has never been able to string together the impressive performances that would push him into the top tier of fighters. Saturday at UFC 121 in Anaheim, he will face Brendan Schaub in an attempt to bounce back from his last fight. Bouncing back is something Gonzaga has had to do a few times in his career.

Debut Hill: After five fights in Brazil, Gonzaga debuted at UFC 56 in 2005 with a late KO of Kevin Jordan. He followed that up with a TKO of Fabiano Scherner and an armbar of Carmelo Marrero.

Mt. Mirko: Those three wins earned Gonzaga a shot at Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic, the PRIDE legend with headkicks that seemed to have the ability to decapitate. Cro Cop got a taste of his own medicine at UFC 70, when Gonzaga knocked him out with a first-round headkick.

The Valley of the Main Event: Those three wins earned Gonzaga a title shot against the then heavyweight champ, Randy Couture. That title shot didn't work out so well for Gonzaga, as Couture TKOed him in the third round after a performance that earned the Fight of the Night bonus at UFC 74.

Vai Cavalo Canyon: Things went from bad to worse for Gonzaga. At UFC 80, he lost by TKO to Fabricio "Vai Cavalo" Werdum.

Double J Hill: Gonzaga rebounded with two wins, a submission of Justin McCully and one-minute knockout of Josh Hendricks.

Shane Valley: Any momentum gained from the quick wins over McCully and Hendricks was stopped by Shane Carwin at UFC 96. Carwin TKOed Gonzaga in 1:09 of the first round.

Tuchscherer Molehill: At UFC 102, Gonzaga earned a quick TKO win over Brock Lesnar's training partner.

Valley of the JDS: That brings us to Gonzaga's latest bout, a loss to Junios Dos Santos in the first round of their bout at UFC on Versus 1. With a beautiful hook, JDS sent Gonzaga to the ground.

One thing to note about Gonzaga's career -- he has never had a fight go to decision. Win or lose, he does not rely on judges to decide the winner of his fights. What do you think the UFC 121 bout with Schaub will be: a hill or valley?

Patriot or fight fan? Either way Robert Downey Jr. enjoyed Condit KO of Hardy

Robert Downey Jr. is one brave man. In a sea of a 17,000-plus British fight fans, it appeared he was lone spectator who enjoyed Carlos Condit's beatdown of Dan Hardy. Earlier in the show at UFC 120, RDJ was seen on the telecast sitting with his acting buddies Guy Ritchie and Jude Law, both Brits. MMACagedoor.com got this great photo of Downey Jr. celebrating the beginning of the end for Hardy. The brash Brit ate a nasty left hook from the American and fell to his back where he took two more shots in the kisser before referee Dan Miragliotta saved him.

RDJ's reaction is also caught on Dana White's UFC 120 fight night vlog (4:25 mark).

It's also worth noting White had WBA heavyweight champ David Haye as a guest sitting next to him alongside the Octagon. It's good to see White has become acquainted with Haye. Back in July, White told Ryen Russillo on ESPNRadio that he wasn't familiar with Haye (audio - 4:28 mark). He made a smart move befriending the young Brit. Haye's a big star in the U.K. and one of the few boxers who gives MMA its respect.

UFC 120: Carlos Condit KOs Dan Hardy

by Michael David SmithDan Hardy and Carlos Condit exchange kicks at UFC 120 on Saturday in London.Dan Hardy complained heading into his fight with Carlos Condit at UFC 120 that Condit and his trainer, Greg Jackson, are too cautious and try to win dull decisions. He can't say that anymore.

Instead, Condit knocked Hardy out with a brutal left hook in the first round of their bout in London on Saturday.

After the televised card got off to a dull start with three straight decisions, Condit changed everything by standing and trading shots with Hardy. After a couple minutes of action, Condit and Hardy both threw left hooks at each other at the same time, but Condit's landed just in time to send Hardy to the canvas. Condit landed a couple more on the ground to erase any doubt.

Shane Carwin announces fight with Nelson via email to fans

The former UFC heavyweight contender announced his first fight after losing to Brock Lesnar at UFC 116. Shane Carwin sent an email to members of his fan community, announcing that he will fight Roy Nelson on New Year's Day.

I will be fighting Roy Nelson on 1-1-11 in Las Vegas Nevada.  The fight will be the Co-Main Event of the Edgar Maynard rematch.

I think Roy is a tough opponent for anyone. He has been in several main event situations and has fought a lot of veterans in the sport. I am honored to be fighting again and feel like Roy is a worth opponent.

My goal for the fight is to be exciting and go home with the win. I have a lot to prove as does Roy so this should make for a great fight.

Sending an email to fans is completely in line with Carwin's style. From the beginning of his career, he's been incredibly accessible to fans. His Twitter feed is filled with replies to his supporters.

UFC 125 is already shaping up to be an action-packed card. In addition to Carwin/Nelson and Edgar/Maynard, Clay Guida confirmed that he will fight Takanori Gomi.

Coenen takes Strikeforce womens 135-lb. belt, Kaufman's arm

After two lackluster rounds, Sarah Kaufman and Marloes Coenen put together a spectacular finish for the Strikeforce women's championship fight in San Jose on Saturday night. Coenen won the belt with an armbar at 1:59 in the third round.

The women had a cautious first round, spending much of it in the clinch. Twice, they were broken up by the referee. Coenen used her reach advantage to keep Kaufman at a distance. This continued in the second round. Both women threw more knees in the second, but were still broken apart. Kaufmann finished the second round well, reversing a Coenen hip toss, landing on top and throwing vicious ground strikes as the round came to a close.

The third round started almost as exactly as the second ended. Coenen took Kaufman down, but Kaufman reversed her easily. She followed up with huge strikes. It appeared that Kaufman was close to finishing off Coenen until Coenen grabbed an arm and turned it for an armbar. Kaufman tapped quickly, handing over the Strikeforce women's championship to Coenen.

There was a bit of controversy after the fight, as Kaufman claimed that Coenen held onto the armbar after Kaufman had tapped. Coenen apologized profusely, diffusing what could have been a bad situation.

"I really didn't know. The referee came in too late, and I apologize, Sarah," Coenen said about the armbar after the fight.

Miesha Tate is up next for Coenen. After the fight, Coenen had a short, simple message for her next opponent. "Let's get it on."

Title shot hopes for Jon Fitch seem dim

In a video he recently Tweeted, Jon Fitch showed that he is not an adept standup paddleboarder.

Falling off the paddleboard after three seconds is the least of Fitch's problems. That welterweight title shot that he thought he was in line for? It turns out that the winner of Jake Shields vs. Martin Kampmann will likely get the next shot at the winner of Georges St. Pierre vs. Josh Koscheck.

"If Jake Shields should win against Martin Kampmann, it will probably be him next," [Dana] White said.

That "probably" is a ray of hope for Fitch. Probably means nothing is set in stone. Fitch proposed that he should fight the winner of Shields/Kampmann for the title shot. What would you like to see happen with the UFC welterweight belt?

Akiyama might actually employ a strategy against Bisping

The days of fighting overmatched or undersized opponents are over. Yoshihiro Akiyama was a big box office draw while fighting in Japan so promoters teneded to make sure the Asian megastar was showcased in his matches. In the UFC, he's just one of the herd at middleweight. He's put on two awesome shows in going 1-1 but he doesn't like a middleweight title contender and without a win over Michael Bisping, he may be in jeopardy of getting that big fight against, Wanderlei Silva.

What's been the problem? Simply stated, Akiyama doesn't look like he's played to his strengths in either fight. Instead, he chose to slug it out with both Alan Belcher and Chris Leben.

Akiyama explained that he had no choice against Leben, who was a late replacement.

"There were certain things holding me back from fighting my best in that fight," said Akiyama through his translator Ryo Ishibashi. "I felt like I didn’t have enough time to prepare for my opponent. And so during the fight I wasn’t able to come up with a strategy that is specifically for Chris Leben."

It seems a bit preposterous considering that Leben fights one way. "The Crippler" comes straight forward and tries to land left hay-makers. Instead of trying to take the fight to the ground, use his kicks, make sure he circled to his left, Akiyama stood right in front of Leben. Even worse, Akiyama tired badly for the second straight time. If anything, it should've been Leben who gassed. He was the one coming off a week's rest.

Akiyama has pulled out all the stops to try and become a smarter fighter. He spent time with the strategical guru, trainer Greg Jackson in Albuquerque. During the UFC 120 conference call, it sounded as if Bisping isn't buying that some massive change is coming with Akiyama's style.

I’m expecting him to come in hard and fast, looking for the knockout. Obviously, he’s got good judo. And I don’t feel a couple of weeks at Greg Jackson’s is ultimately going to make much difference to how he performs," said Bisping. "You know, two – he can go train anywhere for two weeks, but all the years of training that he’s done prior to that are what’s important."

This is also a huge fight for Bisping, who can't afford another tumble down the 185-pound ladder.

Jones-Bader fight is now in limbo?

For two guys who are trying to take the next step into the top five of the UFC's light heavyweight division, Ryan Bader and Jon Jones are sure presenting a lot of roadblocks in making the fight. When it first came out that Jones, the promotion's hottest prospect, was going to match up against another prospect in Bader, "Bones" expressed his disappointment in the fight. He didn't want to face another one-dimensional wrestler. You also got the feeling Jones wants to get in there with a bigger name.

Jones, who hasn't fought since the very beginning of August, wanted to do it on Jan. 1. Then Bader pushed for Super Bowl Saturday in February. Now Dana White indicates that the fight isn't made and may not happen at all. From MMAWeekly.com:

"I don't know if Jones is going to fight Bader," White said. "We tried to put that fight together, but Bader has some stuff going on. Jon Jones might be fighting somebody else, I don't know how that's going to go."

Apparently, Bader now has an issue because of his upcoming wedding. This coming from MMAWeekly.com:

Bader had discussed timing of his next fight when appearing on MMAWeekly Radio following his win over Antonio Rogerio Nogueira at UFC 119, and stated that he was getting married at the end of October and planned on taking a 2-week honeymoon following the ceremony.

A two-week vacation would have Bader returning home, at the latest, three weeks into November. Super Bowl Saturday is 11 weeks after that. Bader doesn't have enough time to prep for the fight? You can't kill the guy for wanting to spend Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's with his new wife, but it sounds like he may be blowing a golden opportunity and that the promotion isn't going to keep Jones waiting around.

"Jon Jones is an incredibly talented guy. He's very young, he's got some fights ahead of him, plus that's an incredibly stacked division," White commented. "He's going to have to go through a couple of guys before he gets a title shot, but at the rate Jon Jones is going he could be fighting for the title next year."

This all would've been nice to know before the UFC booked Forrest Griffin to face Rich Franklin on that Super Saturday card. So who should Jones face if it's not Bader?

Strikeforce's heavyweight division looks great, but where are the fights?

The tough talk started back June. But nothing came of it. That's when Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker began to suggest the promotion wasn't going to be pushed around anymore by its biggest heavyweight star, Fedor Emelianenko. Fedor would be matched up against Alistair Overeem, where his management liked it or not. It looks like Fedor still wears the pants in the family. He's not fighting  in 2011. In fact, the matchmaking games spread to the entire Strikeforce heavyweight roster. It's impressive crew led by the champ Fabricio Werdum, Alistair Overeem, Fedor, Josh Barnett, Antonio Silva, Brett Rogers and Sergei Kharitonov, but they may all sidelined as far the promotion goes for the remainder of 2010. What gives? Coker again said, he's putting his foot down.

"... all those guys are all going to fight each other in 2011,” Coker told Sherdog's Beatdown Radio. "We’re not going to hold anything back. You’re going to see these guys fight the toughest guys because really, if you’re a heavyweight, there are no easy fights in Strikeforce."

Yet there are two fall cards and none of these elite big men are squaring off. The most glaring absence is Overeem. The Dutch muscleman had a tremendous amount of U.S. momentum on his side after smashing Rogers back in May and we haven't seen him since. That's unless you're an HDNet devotee and you love kickboxing. Overeem blocked out his entire fall calendar to take part in K-1's Final 16.

"It’s very clear in our agreement with Alistair that we have booking priority," Coker said of allowing Overeem to fight in K-1. "So we could have easily said no, but then is it really fair to him? It’s a personal goal of his. Let him go try to be the best standup fighter in the world. … we’re going to support him and we’re going to wish him well and hopefully he can win the whole tournament. Then he can come back the Strikeforce champion and the K-1 heavyweight champion. As far as accomplishments, I’ve never seen that done before."

That sounds great for the future of Strikeforce. The promotion must be very healthy if its in a position to allow its heavyweight champ to disappear from Showtime for nine-plus months. Overeem isn't the only big omission. Where is Fedor?

"He’s not going to be back this year because the schedule is already full." said Coker.

Really? It's full? Strikeforce has two solid cards to close the year but they're far from full.

Maybe we're all being impatient but it seems like Strikeforce is whiffing on an opportunity to show off what has turned into an intriguing heavyweight division. You take a look at the top five big men for both the UFC and Strikeforce and there's certainly a legitimate argument which promotion has the best.

Strikeforce - UFC (rankings according to USA Today/Bloody Elbow)
1. Fedor - Brock Lesnar
2. Werdum - Cain Velasquez
3. Overeem - Shane Carwin
4. Silva - Junior Dos Santos
5. Barnett - Frank Mir
