UFC 121: Tom Lawlor Dominates Patrick Cote

by Michael David SmithTom Lawlor put on a one-sided beat-down of Patrick Cote on the first televised bout of Saturday's UFC 121 fight card, dominating Cote on the ground for three rounds on the way to an easy -- and not particularly exciting -- unanimous decision.

Lawlor grabbed Cote, held him against the fence and then took him down in the early going, and that was exactly where he wanted to be. They spent the rest of the round on the ground with Lawlor fairly well dominating, hitting Cote and almost finishing him with an arm-triangle choke, which Cote broke free from with the help of an illegal grab of the fence. It was an easy 10-9 round for Lawlor.

Bellator: Frausto ends Fujii's winning streak to win women's belt

Zoila Frausto won the first women's Bellator belt by ending Megumi Fujii's 22-win streak with a split decision, 48-47, 49-46, 47-48. Frausto's win ended the longest winning streak in MMA.

Fujii dominated the first round, even knocking Frausto down early. But the last 20 seconds, Frausto wobbled her with a head kick, followed by huge strikes. Fujii survived and moved ahead slightly in the second, but never really found a rhythm.

Frausto showed off her striking skills in the third round, pushing the pace and landing several big strikes. Fujii looked in trouble more than once, and sustained a large mouse underneath her eye. Though she is a submission specialist, Fujii did not make many attempts to get a takedown. She finally tried for a clinch in the fourth round, but was unable to use her judo skills to throw Frausto. Fujii finally got a takedown in the final minute of the fight, but didn't have enough time or energy to do anything with it.

Fujii's loss is surprising, and her fight strategy was puzzling. Of her 22 wins, 18 have ended by submission, but she did not make many attempts to get Frausto to the ground. She absorbed many of Frausto's power shots along the way.

Frausto's win is her fifth in a row. She's had a busy 2010. In addition to winning the Bellator belt with wins over Fujii, Jessica Aguilar, Jessica Pene and Rosi Sexton, she also has wins over Michelle Ould and Jessica Rakoczy this year. She also lost to Strikeforce's Miesha Tate in March.

In an earlier bout, Mike Bernhard won a close decision over Dragan Tesanovic, with the judges seeing it 30-27, 29-28, 29-28. The close decision was marred by accidental eye pokes and kicks to the crotch, but Bernhard's wrestling ended up being the difference.

Yahoo's Iole on big merger: The pressure is on to win

All fighters feel a sense of urgency but with today's announcement that the WEC's roster is folding into the UFC, the final two WEC cards will be pressure packed. Yahoo! Sports Kevin Iole says in the short run with a few less cards on the schedule mid-level fighters up and down the UFC/WEC roster will be under the gun to win.

The increased roster depth now makes it easier for the UFC to pitch new shows to existing or new networks. If you're a fighter, you just have to win to keep yourself in the mix for what could be on the horizon in 2011.

Some of the key pressure fights at WEC 52 include:

Raphael Assuncao v. L.C. Davis
Assuncao has lost two straight which puts the Brazilian at risk. LC Davis needs a win to erase the bad taste of getting choked out by Josh Grispi.

Anthony Njokuani v. Edwards Faaloloto
At the start of 2010, Njokuani was on the fast track to a title shot at 155 pounds. His weak takedown defense did him in against Shane Roller and even more surprising he was beat on the feet by newcomer Maciej Jewtuszko. A third straight loss, especially against a WEC newcomer could be devastating to his future.

Cub Swanson v. Mackens Sermerzier
Swanson has toiled in obscurity for a while and would love nothing better than the big stage in UFC. He's been rotating between winning and losing. He needs a win here. The same goes for Sermerzier, who's on a two-fight losing streak.

Ellenberger uses the power of Twitter to call out 'hated' Shields

UFC welterweight Jake Ellenberger wants a piece of Jake Shields, and he's using his mouth to try to make it happen. Never mind that Shields has already cemented his title shot with a win over Martin Kampmann, and that Ellenberger is in line behind Jon Fitch and Carlos Condit, a fighter who has beaten Ellenberger. He wants Shields, and he is using the power of Twitter to try to sway the powers-that-be in the UFC.

Ellenberger -- who has recent TKO wins over John Howard and Mike Pyle -- has called out Shields several times on Twitter in the last few days, questioning Shields' title shot immediately after the fight, then going on to say:

Ellenberger isn't the first fighter to use a strategy of asking for fights to move up for a bout. Dan Hardy, "King Mo" Lawal and Ben Saunders have all gotten a shot at top fights by simply asking for them. Ellenberger would have to clear a lot of hurdles to get a shot at Shields before Shields fights either Georges St. Pierre or Josh Koscheck for the UFC welterweight title, but stranger things have happened in MMA.

UPDATE: Cagewriter spoke with Ellenberger via text, and he said that both Jake Shields and the UFC have not responded to his tweets. "But it's only a matter of time. Fake Shields is a fraud. Excuse me, Miss Piggy is a fraud," Ellenberger said. Why Miss Piggy?

"When he fights, he reminds me of Miss Piggy, with hs softness and feminine charm."

Ellenberger's beef with Shields comes from before both fighters were with the UFC. He says that he had a signed contract to fight Shields, but Shields' father (and manager) pulled him out of the bout because it was a bad match-up. Ellenberger admits that Condit and Fitch also have a claim on a bout with Shields, but, "I hate him more."

Schaub jabs his way to win over Gonzaga at UFC 121

You'd think Gabriel Gonzaga had never seen a jab before. Brendan Schaub's isn't lightning quick, but he used it often enough to keep the Brazilian at bay. More importantly, it seemed to throw off his timing and stymie most of his offensive attack. Schaub, the runner-up on Season 10 of The Ultimate Fighter, got a solid victory via unanimous decision, 30-27 on all cards.

"Gabe is one of the top heavyweight in the world," said Schaub. "This was a big step up for me. I'm just glad to get out with a victory. (The jab) was the key to my success. Our gameplan was to mix it up and get him frustrated."

Gonzaga (11-6, 7-5 UFC) is a multi-talented guy with great jiu-jitsu and big punching power but he looked listless from the get-go. Schaub popped him with the jab throughout and had Gonzaga on his heels. Gonzaga's best offense came on leg kicks but he didn't throw them with enough frequence. Schaub's speed was too much. Anytime they stood toe-to-toe, Schaub usuaully got off six shots to Gonzaga's two.

Schaub delivered plus-150 as a good-sized underdog. Gonzaga is just 3-5 in the UFC since late 2007.

That makes it 3-1 with the promotion for the 27-year-old Schaub. The former University of Colorado fullback has the size (6-foot-4, 240 pounds) and power to make some waves. This should earn him a shot at a top 15 UFC heavyweight like Cheick Kongo, Stefan Struve or Ben Rothwell.

UFC 121 picks, Vegas-style: Velasquez looks to ruin 'Brocktober'

After UFC 100, Brock Lesnar was labeled an unstoppable force. Following a rough performance at UFC 116 against Shane Carwin, that kind of talk has died down. Was Lesnar overrated or is Carwin just that good? The next guy to put Lesnar's reputation to the test is Cain Velasquez. He's getting a lot of respect from bettors and fight insiders. Is he big enough to lock horns with Lesnar? Or will he wear out the monster?

Damon Martin from MMAWeekly and Larry Pepe from ProMMARadio joined me on RawVegas.tv to breakdown the big fights in Anaheim this weekend.

UFC 121 odds (Courtesy Lagasse Stadium Las Vegas):

Cain Velasquez (+120) vs. Brock Lesnar (-150) -- UFC heavyweight title
Martin Kampmann (+210) vs. Jake Shields (-270)
Tito Ortiz (+130) vs. Matt Hamill (-160)
Paulo Thiago (-110) vs. Diego Sanchez (-120)
Tom Lawlor (Even) vs. Patrick Cote (-130)
Paul Taylor (+200) vs. Sam Stout (-250)
Matt Schaub (+170) vs. Gabe Gonzaga (-200)
Ryan Jensen (+190) vs. Court McGee (-240)
Mike Guymon (+140) vs. Daniel Roberts (-170)
Chris Camozzi (Even) vs. Dongi Yang (-130)
Gilbert Yvel (+150) vs. Jon Madsen (-180)

MMA Top 10 Pound-for-Pound: Cain Velasquez Belongs

When it comes to pound-for-pound rankings, the biggest question is always how to deal with heavyweights. Some people think a pound-for-pound list should never include any heavyweight champions at all. Others say if you're the heavyweight champ, you belong in the Top 10, just as the champions at bantamweight, featherweight, lightweight, welterweight, middleweight and light heavyweight belong.

When Fedor Emelianenko was the heavyweight king, I always had him on my pound-for-pound list. But when Brock Lesnar took Fedor's place as the sport's top heavyweight, I didn't list Lesnar. My feeling was that Lesnar's greatness was much more about size and strength than skill, and therefore Lesnar wasn't really suited to being in the pound-for-pound Top 10.

Now that Cain Velasquez is the heavyweight champion of the world, I'm back to having a heavyweight in my Top 10. Find out where and why below.

We're nearing the apex of all the hype for UFC 121 and Brock Lesnar's title bout with Cain Velasquez, and quite frankly, we could use a break. A little levity is called for, and here it is in the form of UFC commentator Joe Rogan doing a dead-on impression of Strikeforce commentator Mauro Ranallo.

Nick Diaz Is an Old-School Martial Artist

by Michael David SmithStrikeforce welterweight champion Nick Diaz cultivates an image of a street fighter, but in the video below from Fight Magazine he explains that he's actually been a student of traditional martial arts since he was a small child.

"I did aikido when I was four years old," Diaz says. "My first experience of doing martial arts was weird, real traditional, strange smell with incense burning. We did a lot of bowing, it was a lot of path of least resistance and go with the flow. ... Really good stuff for when you're at a young age."

ESPN's 'Sports Science' says no power discrepancy between Cain and Brock

Did you hear the news? The NFL fined Cain Velasquez for a vicious hit. It seems that's how far the ominpotent league reaches nowadays. The UFC doesn't frown on putting your head through your opponent's chest, meaning Brock Lesnar better watch out. Velasquez showed off his takedowns during a recent visit to ESPN's "Sports Science" where he tested his power and endurance.

It was no shocker to hear Velasquez's stamina was on the same level as a marathon runner but the 245-pounder impressed even more in the strength department.

The show said Velasquez punches with as much power as any boxer they've ever had in the lab. His tackle/takedown of that poor dummy (broken neck and two torn ACLs) matched the level of tackling power shown by NFL player Dwight Freeney.

So the 270-pound Lesnar won't have a power advantage over Velasquez. You buying it?

WEC roster added to the UFC: Top 10 fighters to watch

The little guys from WEC are on the way to the UFC. It gives Zuffa more ready-made stars to plug into the lineup on pay-per-view cards. With the influx of 135-155 pounders, there are a ton of action fights on the horizon. If you haven’t watched much Versus and WEC, here are the top 10 players moving over to the big show.

1. Jose Aldo, featherweight - The 24-year-old, the 145-pound champ has already exploded into the top 10 pound-for-pound. He’s 8-0 with the promotion and has won 11 straight overall. With Aldo on board with the UFC, he also has the flexibility to move up to 155 pounds. The only question on Aldo remains his ability to defend the takedown against top level wrestlers. He hasn’t met that type of fighter yet.

2. Urijah Faber, bantamweight - The guy who carried the WEC for years finally gets the exposure he deserves. The 5-foot-5 Faber is down where he belongs at 135 and with a media savvy/friendly personality plus matinee idol looks he could become a star on the same level as Georges St, Pierre or Brock Lesnar.

3. Miguel Torres, bantamweight - Truly the most well-rounded fighter in the WEC, the timing is perfect for Torres. Casual MMA fans will love his personality and his warrior style in the cage. He’s also working toward becoming a smarter fighter and playing more to his strengths on the ground.

4. Anthony Pettis, lightweight - His title shot on Dec. 16 against Ben Henderson just went from big to enormous. If Pettis pulls the mild upset and takes the title, he’ll get an immediate shot at the UFC lightweight title against Frank Edgar or Gray Maynard. Pettis, 23, is a big 155-pounder and can do it all.

5. Dominick Cruz, bantamweight - He’s a riddle yet to be solved down at 135. Another young fighter at 25-years-old, Cruz’s herky, jerky striking style is reminiscent of great defensive boxers of the past. The list of contenders and big fights at bantamweight in the UFC could easily headline PPV cards for a few years before any new fighters move into the mix.

6. Joe Benavidez, bantamweight - Benavidez may be the best action fighter in the sport and should be a candidate for the much bigger fight of the night bonuses available on UFC cards. He had match up issues against Cruz’s style but he’ll be a candidate for the 135 title again in the future. He may also provide some headaches for UFC matchmakers. If Faber can get the bantamweight title and is dominant, his teammate Benavidez still won’t take the fight.

7. Brian Bowles, bantamweight - The former 135 champ is the forgotten man but that’s a mistake. He brings one thing the rest of the bigger names in the weight class don’t - one punch knockout power. Bowles could be in line for some nice paydays as he works his way back from issues with his hands.

8. Ben Henderson, lightweight - Overrated or underrated, now Henderson, 26, will be put to the test. He has some of the best cardio in the division but now he’s stepping into the world of guys like Edgar, Maynard, Sean Sherk, Evan Dunham, Kenny Florian, George Sotiropolous and possibly Diego Sanchez. The USA Today/Bloody Elbow rankings only has Henderson ranked No. 14 in the world. That’s some serious motivation.

9. Josh Grispi, featherweight - The New Englander is on the verge of breaking out. The 22-year-old just needs to be a little more active. At just over 6-foot tall, he's a rangy guy for the weight class.

10. Donald Cerrone, lightweight
- Think of him as the 155-pound Chris Lytle. Cerrone may be no better than a .500 fighter in the UFC but he’ll bring it every time out. If he cuts down on his willingness to fight from his back, Cerrone has a chance to pull some big upsets. He’s also adds another crazy guy to the UFC roster when it comes to hyping a fight.

Who else are you excited to see on the big shows?

UFC return comes early for WEC's Garcia, TUF 12 Finale adds the brawler

We won't have to wait very long before the first official sign of the WEC-UFC merger. Jose Aldo was supposed to kick things off for WEC fighters at UFC 125 on Jan. 1. Now MMAWeekly reports that the first look at WEC fighters in the UFC will arrive in less than six weeks.

... Leonard Garcia and Tyler Toner have agreed to meet at the "Ultimate Fighter" season 12 finale show on Dec 4.

There shouldn't be any UFC butterflies for Garcia, who fought three times for the promotion at lightweight before he dropped down to 145 pounds and the WEC in 2008. Garcia (pictured on the left) challenged for the WEC featherweight title at WEC 39, losing to Mike Brown. He's gone 2-2-1 since, so there's some pressure on him to win against Toner. Another loss and Garcia (14-6-1, 3-3-1 WEC, 1-2 UFC) could be sent packing. Toner (10-2) was 1-1 with the WEC.

Here's the rumored card at the TUF 12 Finale:

Stephan Bonnar v. Igor Pokrajac
Finalist No. 1 v. Finalist No. 2
Kendall Grove v. Demian Maia
Rick Story v Johny Hendricks
Rich Attonito v. Dave Branch
Leonard Garcia v. Tyler Toner

Bellator crowns Konrad, Makovsky as latest champs

Kansas City hosted Bellator 32 on Thursday night, where Bellator gave out its first heavyweight and bantamweight championship belts.

Cole Konrad had earned the reputation of being a boring fighter. In his first four Bellator fights, Konrad won decisions by using the elite wrestling skills honed while becoming a two-time national champion at the University of Minnesota. Konrad changed that on Thursday night, winning with a first-round submission over Neil Grove.

Konrad took down Grove, the feared striker, early in the round. He continued to work ground and pound until the end of the round neared. Then, he grabbed Grove's arm for a keylock, forcing Grove to submit at 4:45 of the first round. With that, Konrad became Bellator's first heavyweight champion.

Konrad wasn't the only champion crowned on Thursday, as Zach Makovsky won the bantamweight championship as well.

Makovsky withstood an early Ed West Kimura attempt, and came back to control West with takedowns throughout the fight. In the third, he cut West above the eye, adding to the Makovsky's domination of the fight. With a 50-45, 50-45, 49-46 score, Makovsky became Bellator's first bantamweight champion.

In non-tournament action, "Judo" Jim Wallhead is headed back to England with a win. He beat Ryan Thomas by winning the stand-up war.

Next week, Bellator heads to Philadelphia for a non-title bout between Eddie Alvarez and Roger Huerta as well as Ben Askren trying to take the welterweight belt from Lyman Good.

The promotion also announced two signings: former WEC lightweight champion Rob McCullough and Polish lightweight Marcin Held.

Looking for a promotion, Johnson and Bowling produce mixed results

Strikeforce develops its future stars on its Challengers shows. Three months back, Sarah Kaufman came up big with a win over Roxanne Modafferi to move up Strikeforce's shows on Showtime. Las night, it was time for Roger Bowling and Lavar Johnson to land that signature win that'd get them the call up. Johnson came through with a KO finish of Virgil Zwicker while Roger Bowling showed he needs a little more seasoning during a loss to Bobby Voelker.

Early in the fight, the 6-foot-4, 251-pound Johnson had to deal with the speed of  Zwicker. He took some good licks - leg kicks and some straight rights - before unloading on the smaller heavyweight. Ninety seconds into the first, with little regard for Zwicker's power, the big man began to swing for the fences. After some huge uppercuts, Zwicker crumbled to the mat. Johnson didn't have to throw another shot in getting his third Challenger Series win at 2:17 of the first.

"I hit him hard a few times but he was in it for the fight. He made it a good fight," said Johnson.

Johnson (15-3) said he's ready for the step up to Showtime's main cards.

"I'm ready for the big show. I want to chase down some of those big name guys and see if I have what it takes or not. I'm not afraid of an ass whuppin',"  said Johnson.

Johnson, 33, mentioned names like Andrei Arlovski and Brett Rogers.

Bowling (8-1) looked awesome early in his fight. His speed overwhelmed Voelker but he got a little left hook happy. Voelker lost the first but started to time that Bowling leaping left hook. Voelker had Bowling missing badly in the opening minutes of the second and fired back with some hard shots. That's when Bowling went for a takedown. It got stuffed and instead of scrambling back to his feet, Bowling sat there on all fours allowing Voelker to tee off. He landed six huge shots and it was downhill from there for Bowling.

Bowling got back to his feet but then tried another sloppy takedown that was thwarted. Voelker got top control and never relinquished it. He stayed busy with punches and hammerfists. Bruised and bloodied on his face, Bowling eventually covered up and turned to his side. The referee had to save him giving Voelker (23-8) the win at 3:58 of the second.

Strikeforce Challengers results (Courtesy MMAjunkie):

Bobby Voelker def. Roger Bowling via TKO (punches) - Round 2, 3:58

Julia Budd def. Shana Olsen via TKO (punches) - Round 2, 2:51

UFC 120 KO of the Night: Condit's left hook quiets Hardy

Dan Hardy is one of the biggest smack talkers in the game. He flat out challenges his opponents to stand and trade with him. Tonight, it all backfired on him. Carlos Condit wasn't suckered into a reckless slugfest. Instead, he used a well-rounded striking game and exhibited smoother boxing to find an opening that nearly put Hardy to sleep. In the final minute of the opening round, "The Natural Born Killer" landed a huge left hook and dropped Hardy to his back. The stunned Hardy then took a right to the middle of his face and another left across his chin.

Before Condit, did permanent damage, referee Dan Miragliotta tossed him from the helpless Brit. In front of a pro-Hardy crowd at UFC 120 in London, Condit scores a huge TKO win at 4:27 of the first.

"I was worried about his left hand. I know he's got a lot of power," Condit told UFC analyst Joe Rogan.

The normally loquacious Hardy didn't have much to say seconds after being knocked out.

"I got punched in the face," Hardy said succinctly as the crowd at the O2 Arena chuckled. "Sorry guys. That's why it's a sport. You can win or lose at any point. I'll go home and watch it, and see where I went wrong and learn from it. "

Condit (26-5, 3-1 UFC) also hauled in a $60,000 bonus for knockout of the night. Before you go slamming Hardy, keep in mind, the match could've easily gone the other way. That's how narrow your margin of error is when you step in the Octagon.

On the finishing series of punches, both Hardy and Condit threw right hands that missed and followed with left hooks. Condit's left hook landed flush and a split second earlier as Hardy's punch grazed his neck.

Against a guy with a reputation for having a granite chin, this is a huge victory for Condit. Hardy (23-8, 4-2 UFC) also fought for the 170-pound title his last time out, losing a decision at UFC 111 to UFC welterweight champ Georges St. Pierre. Does that mean Condit should be in the running for the winner of GSP and Josh Koscheck? He probably should be.

Were it not for a tight decision loss to Martin Kampmann in his UFC debut, Condit could very easily be unbeaten with Zuffa's bigger promotion. He was 170-pound champ with the WEC, its smaller promotion. Condit was 5-0 there before the WEC eliminated the weight class.

GSP defend his title against Josh Koscheck in December. If Koscheck wins, Jon Fitch has been consistent in saying that even for the title, he won't fight his American Kickboxing Academy teammate. Condit has no such issue with St. Pierre. They both work with trainer Greg Jackson and his camp based in Albuquerque, but Condit stated during the UFC 124 postfight press conference that if he was offered the fight, he'd take it GSP. That's the kind of thing the UFC likes to hear.

Another feather in Condit's cap is the consistency of his performances since his move over to the UFC. He's an action fighter who's now nabbed three postfight awards. The 26-year-old also has 25 finishes in his 26 wins.

Napao! The ups and downs of Gabriel Gonzaga

Gabriel Gonzaga has been near the top of the UFC heavyweight division for years, but he has never been able to string together the impressive performances that would push him into the top tier of fighters. Saturday at UFC 121 in Anaheim, he will face Brendan Schaub in an attempt to bounce back from his last fight. Bouncing back is something Gonzaga has had to do a few times in his career.

Debut Hill: After five fights in Brazil, Gonzaga debuted at UFC 56 in 2005 with a late KO of Kevin Jordan. He followed that up with a TKO of Fabiano Scherner and an armbar of Carmelo Marrero.

Mt. Mirko: Those three wins earned Gonzaga a shot at Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic, the PRIDE legend with headkicks that seemed to have the ability to decapitate. Cro Cop got a taste of his own medicine at UFC 70, when Gonzaga knocked him out with a first-round headkick.

The Valley of the Main Event: Those three wins earned Gonzaga a title shot against the then heavyweight champ, Randy Couture. That title shot didn't work out so well for Gonzaga, as Couture TKOed him in the third round after a performance that earned the Fight of the Night bonus at UFC 74.

Vai Cavalo Canyon: Things went from bad to worse for Gonzaga. At UFC 80, he lost by TKO to Fabricio "Vai Cavalo" Werdum.

Double J Hill: Gonzaga rebounded with two wins, a submission of Justin McCully and one-minute knockout of Josh Hendricks.

Shane Valley: Any momentum gained from the quick wins over McCully and Hendricks was stopped by Shane Carwin at UFC 96. Carwin TKOed Gonzaga in 1:09 of the first round.

Tuchscherer Molehill: At UFC 102, Gonzaga earned a quick TKO win over Brock Lesnar's training partner.

Valley of the JDS: That brings us to Gonzaga's latest bout, a loss to Junios Dos Santos in the first round of their bout at UFC on Versus 1. With a beautiful hook, JDS sent Gonzaga to the ground.

One thing to note about Gonzaga's career -- he has never had a fight go to decision. Win or lose, he does not rely on judges to decide the winner of his fights. What do you think the UFC 121 bout with Schaub will be: a hill or valley?

Patriot or fight fan? Either way Robert Downey Jr. enjoyed Condit KO of Hardy

Robert Downey Jr. is one brave man. In a sea of a 17,000-plus British fight fans, it appeared he was lone spectator who enjoyed Carlos Condit's beatdown of Dan Hardy. Earlier in the show at UFC 120, RDJ was seen on the telecast sitting with his acting buddies Guy Ritchie and Jude Law, both Brits. MMACagedoor.com got this great photo of Downey Jr. celebrating the beginning of the end for Hardy. The brash Brit ate a nasty left hook from the American and fell to his back where he took two more shots in the kisser before referee Dan Miragliotta saved him.

RDJ's reaction is also caught on Dana White's UFC 120 fight night vlog (4:25 mark).

It's also worth noting White had WBA heavyweight champ David Haye as a guest sitting next to him alongside the Octagon. It's good to see White has become acquainted with Haye. Back in July, White told Ryen Russillo on ESPNRadio that he wasn't familiar with Haye (audio - 4:28 mark). He made a smart move befriending the young Brit. Haye's a big star in the U.K. and one of the few boxers who gives MMA its respect.
